Let’s Reframe the Narrative Around Motivation
We’ve been taught to see motivation as a mental game. If you just try harder, push more, and "get your act together," you'll finally be productive… right?
Not quite
Many of us are trying to “think” our way into doing things, but the body is the one holding the brakes. And that’s because your nervous system and motivation are deeply connected. If your system is dysregulated—no amount of guilt, to-do lists, or coffee will help.
What Does It Mean to Be Dysregulated?
When your nervous system is dysregulated, your body doesn’t feel safe enough to act. You're stuck in protection mode, which hijacks your ability to access clear thinking, energy, or forward motion.
There are 3 main states to be aware of:
Fight/Flight – You’re wired, anxious, overthinking, or emotionally reactive.
Freeze – You feel numb, disconnected, foggy, or paralyzed.
Shutdown – You’re flatlined. Zero motivation. You want to do nothing.
In all three states, productivity is secondary. Your body is focused on survival.
Real-Life Signs You’re Not “Unmotivated”—Just Dysregulated
You avoid tasks until the last possible minute, then panic
You scroll social media instead of tackling something important
You feel guilt and shame after a “lazy” day
You mentally plan things but can’t get your body to follow through
You get overwhelmed by small tasks like doing the dishes or making a phone call
You can’t “make yourself care” about something you used to love
Sound familiar? These aren't character flaws. These are nervous system red flags.
Everyday Practices to Reconnect with Motivation
Let’s flip the script. Motivation isn’t something you force. It’s something that returns when your body feels safe again.
Here’s how to support your nervous system and make space for motivation to naturally re-emerge:
🕰 1. Start Your Day Without a Screen
Why it works: Your nervous system wakes up needing grounding. Going straight to emails or social media spikes cortisol and creates early overstimulation.
Try this instead:
Open a window and take 10 slow breaths
Sip tea or water while you stretch
Put your hand on your chest and say, “You don’t have to rush”
Give your body 5 minutes of calm before the world starts pulling on you.
⏳ 2. Time-Block With Your Nervous System in Mind
Why it works: Our energy dips and rises throughout the day. Instead of resisting your patterns, work with them.
Try this:
Do focused tasks during your “on” hours (usually late morning or early afternoon)
Reserve 2–3 PM for rest, walks, or quiet admin
Use timers (like 25-minute Pomodoros) to create gentle structure
Build your day around your nervous system, not around hustle culture.
📦 3. Shrink the Task, Not Your Worth
Why it works: Dysregulated bodies perceive even small tasks as threats. Instead of telling yourself to “just do it,” break it down.
Instead of: “Clean the house”Try: “Put 3 things away. Then rest.”
Each action tells your body it’s safe to engage—and over time, that adds up.
🌿 4. Reconnect With the Body, Not Just the Mind
Why it works: When stuck, most of us try to think our way out. But your nervous system speaks the language of sensation, not logic.
Try this throughout the day:
Push against a wall for 10 seconds (activates strength + presence)
Take 5 slow exhales, making the exhale twice as long as the inhale
Place your bare feet on the ground and feel the support underneath you
These micro-regulations shift your state—so your system can finally move.
🤝 5. Ask: “Do I Need Movement, Rest, or Support?”
Sometimes we need more rest. Sometimes we need a gentle push. Sometimes we just need someone to see us.
When motivation fades, ask your body:
“Do I need movement?Do I need rest?Or do I need support right now?”
There’s always a reason behind your resistance. Learning to listen is the first step.
Nervous System Health = Sustainable Motivation
You don’t need another planner or another online course.
You need safety, regulation, and rhythm.
Because when your nervous system feels safe, motivation isn’t something you chase—it’s something you naturally return to.
